Frequently Asked Questions & Answers About IPL

All The Questions You Have, With The Answers You Want.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Light energy is delivered to the skin where it is converted into heat energy. Different wavelengths are used to target different chromophores (targets) in the skin such as melanin, pigmentations, acne. IPL treats the target without damaging surrounding tissue.

What does IPL Feel Like?

IPL may be slightly uncomfortable, being compared to the flick of a warm rubber band across the skin, a slight burning/stinging sensation can be expected.  For approximately 24-48 hours after the procedure it may feel as if you have a mild sunburn with a rare development of a blisters or scabbing. After your treatment, you are advised to avoid prolonged sun exposure, hot water and strenuous exercise for 2-5 days.

What Can I Expect From IPL?

Upon completion of your initial consultation and your skin type and concerns have been addressed we will perform some test patches to set your treatment parameters. Eye protection will be provided and a cooling gel applied to ensure maximum comfort. The procedure is often very quick and depending on size of treatment area, takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Upon completion, we will apply soothing gels and/or ice packs if required.

What Does IPL Treat?

IPL uses different wavelength filters that are able effectively treat multiple skin concerns including:

  • Pigmentation (freckles, sunspots);
  • Hair removal;
  • Rosacea;
  • Acne;
  • Broken capillaries;
  • Ageing skin; and
  • Sun damaged skin.

Who is IPL For?

IPL is best suited for lighter skin types. As light is absorbed by melanin present in our hair and skin darker skin types will absorb more light and heat. This can lead to adverse side effects such as burning and hypo/hyper-pigmentation

What Do I need To Do Before Commencing IPL Treatments?

Follow these guidelines to get the most out of your sessions and to remove any risk of side effects:

  • Your skin is not tanned from the sun or artificially with tanning creams;
  • Keep skin clean and hydrated by drinking at least 2 litres of water per day;
  • Avoid using products with essential oils for at least 2-3 days before your session;
  • Do not use Retin-A or clindamycin for at least 2 weeks before your session;
  • Patients using Accutane cannot be treated with IPL. Accutane must not be used for at least 6 months before commencing IPL treatments;

How Does IPL Work?

IPL technology emits a broad spectrum of light energy onto the skin where it is absorbed by a specified chromophore (target) and converted into heat energy. Various targets in the skin absorb light at different wavelengths which is why a specific cut-off filter is utilised to address your primary skin concerns. Light absorbed by the chromophore initiates a biological effect that promotes a healing response. Effectively, the skin begins to rapidly produce new cells to replace old, damaged or disfigured patches of skin.

IPL treatments can be administered anywhere on the body, offering long term skin solutions that are visibly noticeable in weeks. With IPL treatments, you can eradicate years of skin damage in a few short sessions to uncover and renew youthful skin. targeting the skin on a cellular level, results are unmatched by other cosmetics that only offer short term solutions.

How Many IPL Sessions Are Required?

Typically, a series of 6-10 treatments administered 3-4 weeks apart is recommended to achieve a significant result. Depending on your goals and severity of skin condition more sessions may be required for completion.

What's The Difference Between IPL and Laser?

Lasers produce light from one specific wavelength and is directed at a specified target. Laser light is more focused and uses a very narrow beam. IPL is broad-spectrum and covers a much larger area than laser.

Do IPL Treatments Hurt?

IPL is generally well tolerated and has been described as a warm rubber band being flicked across the skin.

Is There Any Downtime?

No, IPL technology is much more advanced these days with no downtime required after your session.

What Happens At the First Appointment?

During your initial consultation, your skin type will be assessed with a comprehensive list of questions to ensure there are no contraindications that would compromise your treatment. A test patch is performed to find the perfect setting to treat your skin concerns.
